How to stay warm in bed this winter

We all love the cold side of the pillow; but feeling chilly when we’re in bed is often another story. As temperatures generally reach their lowest points outside, it’s important to keep your body warm to protect your circadian rhythms (an internal process that regulates the sleep–wake cycle every 24 hours), which can be affected by unregulated temperatures and night-time wakeups.

If you find yourself struggling to sleep during winter, read on for our top tips to keep warm.

Set your room’s temperature

One reason that sleeping during winter can be tricky for many is that it can be harder to find the perfect room temperature – too warm and you’re tossing and turning; too cold and you’re struggling to drift off. So, what is the ideal temperature? The Sleep Foundation believe we should be keeping our rooms at around 18.3 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit) for the most comfortable night’s sleep, but this will of course vary from person to person.

Heating your home all night long may be far too expensive for many, but if you’re able to only heat your bedroom and keep the door shut and any draughts out, this can be a cheaper alternative to having to warm your entire home unnecessarily.

To also save on extortionate heating bills, ensure you have the right bedding to start with to keep warm at night. Although this may be a more expensive upfront cost, it will avoid the need to splurge on electricity bills unnecessarily.

Don’t over-layer

When you’re cold, it can be tempting to put on layer after layer of warm clothing to keep warm – but by doing this you run the risk of overheating and waking up in the night.

If you can avoid opting for layers and instead choose some cosy pyjamas to sleep in from the start, you will notice the benefits far more. Flannel or fluffy pyjamas are a popular choice for many and are an effective way to maintain your body heat without overheating – and they certainly make getting out of bed the next morning that bit more bearable!

Find the right mattress

Finding a mattress that is comfortable, cosy, and supportive is crucial for your sleep and staying warm in bed.

Although mattresses themselves won’t produce heat, you can find options that will keep your body heat regulated, such as the Sleep.8 Tech Mattress. Thanks to its unique system of layers and pressure distribution your body heat is controlled while you sleep, meaning you won’t wake up too warm or too chilly. If you and your partner also find you need different temperatures to sleep, this

mattress offers an individualised support system that allows you both to sleep comfortably without disturbance.

Choose the best bedding

Just as it’s important to find the right mattress, your choice in duvets can also impact your sleep cycle all year-round. To keep warm at night you need a duvet that will trap air whilst still being breathable, but with such a wide range available, what do you go for?

If you are okay with animal products, a down-filled duvet is a common choice, with the feathers giving the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. However, for sleepers who have allergies or are a little more sensitive, hollowfibre or microfiber designs are much more practical and will still help you sleep during winter.

The S8 Beyosa Dual-Zoned Duvet isn’t just completely hypoallergenic but it is the first ever dual-zoned design, making it the perfect choice for couples who need different temperatures to keep warm all year-round. No more fighting for warmth on your side of the duvet – you can have complete control over the temperature of your side of the bed.
