Having a comfortable and supportive mattress to sleep on doesn’t just help alleviate your back pain.
No, it also means you feel happier and less tired next day, which in turn reflects on the relationship you have with your family, friends and colleagues. So, pretty important to get the right mattress from the off, then…
Lower back pain, or lumbago, is something most people will suffer from at some point in their life. That’s because the condition is caused by a number of factors.
It could, for instance, be due to bad posture when sitting at a desk or standing. It can also be down to an unsupported back when sleeping. Then again, a pulled muscle or strained back can also lead to pain in the lower back. Of course, there are other back problems that can lead to lower back pain such as sciatica or a slipped disc.
Our spine actually curves in three places – at the top to support our head, in the middle to protect our upper body, and at the bottom to support our back.
If these curves aren’t in alignment then problems with our back arise.
Sometimes even just changing your sleeping position can help with back pain. But if you do prefer sleeping in a certain way there are still things you can do to make yourself more comfortable.
Side sleepers, for instance, can add another pillow to ensure their head is high enough and there’s not too much pressure on the spine. Someone who sleeps on their back could try putting a pillow between their knees to ensure their spine is correctly aligned while in bed. Those who sleep on their front (the least common position) really should try and switch to a side or back position if they are serious about getting rid of back pain.
Regardless of what position you sleep in, the age of your mattress can have a huge effect on whether or not it is supportive enough for your back. That’s because as a mattress ages it’s support weakens. It tends to sag and as a result your body falls into the space where before your back would have been kept upright.
When you do go to buy a new mattress, make sure you test drive it first. That means, take it home and sleep on it for a month or so to make sure it really is supportive and comfortable enough for you. Let’s face it, you will be sleeping on it for the next eight or so years, so a month or two’s worth of trial and error isn’t a lot in the long run.
Memory foam mattresses can be a good choice for a bad lower back because it moulds into a person’s shape and tend to be very supportive. Latex mattresses do a similarly supportive job. Pocket sprung mattresses are better for larger individuals since they ‘spread the load.’
