Have you ever walked into a home and instantly been put at ease by its scent? No overpowering, overly sweet or sickly fragrances, just an aroma that leaves you remembering the exact moment you stepped foot through the door.

The power of scent is undeniable, and when it comes to your home you can use various products and smells to power your mood and give guests home envy with every visit.

Read on for our guide to incorporating new scents into your home, and our top product suggestions for embracing wellbeing at home.

First things first, which products do you go for?

With so many products to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide what type of product to opt for – and that’s before you even find a scent!

Depending on the room, you’ll find different home fragrances work best in different settings. If you’re looking to fill a room with scent that will last, candles are the obvious choice for many of us. The wonderful thing about candles is that they combine a long-lasting scent with natural lighting, adding even more ambience to a room as you fill it with fragrance. However – it's important to note the risk of candles and having an open flame in your home. Remember to make sure any candles are positioned on stable surfaces that are resistant to heat, and they are always kept far away from any flammable materials!

If you’re looking for a scent to cut through and make an almost immediate impact, room mists and pillow mists can be a great choice of home fragrance. After just couple of sprays your room is instantly filled with a scent of your choice, making mists a popular option for those of us with pets, or frequent hosts. Mists can also be an alternative for those of us with children, with no flames to pose any danger.

Just as with many things in life, moderation is key. When it comes to home fragrance mists, remember that these are mostly water-based, so over spraying could lead to mould or damp on home furnishings with overuse in the long term. Generally, just a few sprays should be all you need to enjoy the scent – so if you’re finding yourself constantly misting the fragrance, it might be time to consider a new brand. Similarly, many sprays can include alcohol, so it is important to keep these out of reach of children, and avoid spraying directly onto fabrics, rather into the air around them.

The final thing to consider is the size of the room you’re working with. In small rooms, strong and overpowering scents can often feel too intense, whereas in large rooms a subtle fragrance might struggle to cut through. Alongside this, consider the scent’s purpose. If you’re looking to counteract any kitchen smells, a stronger scent is going to be needed. However, if you’re looking to give a hallway or porch a new scent, a weaker fragrance might be your best bet.

Getting the most out of your home fragrance

So, how do you make the most out of your scent of choice?

Our top tip? Don’t feel limited by what it says on the tin (or spray!). Find a scent that works for you and your home – if that means using unconventional scents in your rooms, go for it. Just because a scent is generally used in one space, doesn’t mean you need to follow.

Take pillow sprays as an example... Although they are most commonly used to add some relaxing scents to your bedroom, you don’t have to stick to this. So, if you’re having a relaxed night in, why not give your living room a quick spritz and unwind with a good book in here?

Our recommendations

At Sleep.8, our goal is to help you relax - and all the home fragrances we offer are created with exactly this in mind. By partnering ZEMK Care, we offer scented candles and pillow sprays to help you make the most of every relaxing moment – here's just a taster of our range and recommendations:

The Goodnight Lavender and Chamomile Candle is a luxury candle that took 15 months to perfectly develop. Vegan, hand-poured and made from premium plant-based wax, it has a clean long-lasting burn of 45 hours to keep your home smelling fragrant for many relaxing evenings.

More about the fragrance: With opening notes include violet leaf, jasmine and lilac (which are proven to have calming and tranquillising effects that aid a peaceful night’s rest), the scent then drifts into the heart notes of Roman chamomile and both English and French lavender. The results? A balanced fragrance that captivates the senses.

If you’re more of a mist person, the Goodnight Lavender and Lovage Pillow Mist offers all the benefits of the Goodnight Candle – simply with a slightly different scent.

Carefully developed and blended by experts to create a maximum soothing aroma (containing essential oils) that promotes a better night’s rest. This blend of 11 scents starts with the herbaceous lovage, the sweetness of ylang ylang, and a cool hit of eucalyptus. This then settles into a blend of lilac and both English and French lavender, before rounding off with patchouli.

For many of us, the idea of a nap only seems to come on a Sunday afternoon, after a long night before, or when our little ones nap too. However, these quick sleeps can prove far more beneficial than you first think. While not everybody might love the idea of napping, those of us who do can expect heightened alertness, a better night’s sleep overall, and hopefully no 3pm lull at work.

Read on for our guide to nailing the perfect nap, and the benefits of napping.

What counts as a nap?

A nap is any short sleep before you go to bed at night – but what’s the optimum length? SleepFoundation recommend adults should aim for about 20 minutes and no longer than 30 minutes to boost alertness without entering deep sleep, where you risk grogginess when you wake up.

If you have ever noticed the 3pm-4pm lull hitting you at work, it might be wise to consider a nap to combat this. Depending on what time you go to bed, it’s important to time your rest accordingly; too late and you risk jeopardising your night’s sleep, too early and you may struggle to drift off. Generally, any time between 12pm-2pm is ideal for most of us.

If you work irregular shift patterns or find yourself having a bad night’s sleep, napping is also recommended to help you get through your day without feeling groggy or distracted. This is especially true if you risk driving, or operating machinery while tired – find a time that will suit you, where you can rest and fully wake up in enough time to work.

Where should I nap?

The big question – should you be resting in bed, on the sofa, or even try to squeeze in 40 winks on your daily commute?

The environment you choose to rest in is crucial to a good nap. As convenient as quick ten-minute sleeps between train station stops can be, you may find yourself struggling to properly rest due to the noise and light - so wherever possible, opt for comfortable, dark surroundings.

For those of us who are at home during the day, napping can become a far easier part of your routine - but don’t fall victim to sleeping where you work. It is important to create a clear separation between your working areas and resting zones where you can promote a good rest at home.

So, how do you make the perfect at-home environment to enjoy the benefits of napping?

Getting comfortable

Relaxing vs. Napping... Why not do both?

By introducing products and accessories into your naptime routine, you can encourage an even better rest. First things first; scented products. Scents such as chamomile and lavender have proven to help you sleep - and our Goodnight Lavender and Chamomile Candle offers a combination of just those.

By lighting this luxury candle before you nap (and remembering to blow it out before you do sleep!) you can enjoy opening notes of violet leaf, jasmine and lilac, proven to have calming and tranquillising effects that aid rest. The scent then drifts into the heart notes of Roman chamomile and English and French lavender to create a balanced fragrance that captivates the senses.

If you’re not big on candles, why not consider specific pillows to help you get comfortable? The S8 Body Pillow is the perfect choice if you are napping alone, offering all the appeals of sleeping next to somebody without them physically being there.

We all have different tells when we’re tired – and if yours includes puffy or tired eyes, an eye massager might be the perfect napping accompaniment. Designed to de-puff your eyes, improve blood circulation around your eyes and sinuses, and promote deep relaxation, the likes of the S8 Eye Massager Power Eyes are perfect to help you unwind.

Are you ready to nap?

These are just a few products our experts recommend to help you feel the benefits of napping – but explore our website to see the full range!

Finally, once you have napped, remember to give yourself enough time to wake up – especially before returning to any work that requires quick reactions!

We all love the cold side of the pillow; but feeling chilly when we’re in bed is often another story. As temperatures generally reach their lowest points outside, it’s important to keep your body warm to protect your circadian rhythms (an internal process that regulates the sleep–wake cycle every 24 hours), which can be affected by unregulated temperatures and night-time wakeups.

If you find yourself struggling to sleep during winter, read on for our top tips to keep warm.

Set your room’s temperature

One reason that sleeping during winter can be tricky for many is that it can be harder to find the perfect room temperature - too warm and you’re tossing and turning; too cold and you’re struggling to drift off.

So, what is the ideal temperature? The Sleep Foundation believe we should be keeping our rooms at around 18.3 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit) for the most comfortable night’s sleep, but this will of course vary from person to person.

Heating your home all night long may be far too expensive for many, but if you’re able to only heat your bedroom and keep the door shut and any draughts out, this can be a cheaper alternative to having to warm your entire home unnecessarily.

To also save on extortionate heating bills, ensure you have the right bedding to start with to keep warm at night. Although this may be a more expensive upfront cost, it will avoid the need to splurge on electricity bills unnecessarily.

Don’t over-layer

When you’re cold, it can be tempting to put on layer after layer of warm clothing to keep warm – but by doing this you run the risk of overheating and waking up in the night.

If you can avoid opting for layers and instead choose some cosy pyjamas to sleep in from the start, you will notice the benefits far more. Flannel or fluffy pyjamas are a popular choice for many and are an effective way to maintain your body heat without overheating – and they certainly make getting out of bed the next morning that bit more bearable!

Find the right mattress

Finding a mattress that is comfortable, cosy, and supportive is crucial for your sleep and staying warm in bed.

Although mattresses themselves won’t produce heat, you can find options that will keep your body heat regulated, such as the Sleep.8 Tech Mattress. Thanks to its unique system of layers and pressure distribution your body heat is controlled while you sleep, meaning you won’t wake up too warm or too chilly. If you and your partner also find you need different temperatures to sleep, this mattress offers an individualised support system that allows you both to sleep comfortably without disturbance.

Choose the best bedding

Just as it’s important to find the right mattress, your choice in duvets can also impact your sleep cycle all year-round. To keep warm at night you need a duvet that will trap air whilst still being breathable, but with such a wide range available, what do you go for?

If you are okay with animal products, a down-filled duvet is a common choice, with the feathers giving the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. However, for sleepers who have allergies or are a little more sensitive, hollowfibre or microfiber designs are much more practical and will still help you sleep during winter.

The S8 Beyosa Dual-Zoned Duvet isn’t just completely hypoallergenic but it is the first ever dual-zoned design, making it the perfect choice for couples who need different temperatures to keep warm all year-round. No more fighting for warmth on your side of the duvet – you can have complete control over the temperature of your side of the bed.
